Alcohol Rehab Clinics
____________________________________________________________
Most of the time-honored alcohol treatment
methods are commonly built on a 12-step methodology modeled after the twelve-step program that began with
Alcoholics Anonymous.
Other "non-traditional" alcohol rehab methods, though, have emerged for the most part take place in alcohol
rehab clinics or in hospitals and are seen as providing alcohol treatment programs that are not associated with the
12-step rehab methodology.
Alcohol Rehab Clinics: Doctor Prescribed Medications and Counseling
Most of the
non-12-step alcohol rehab approaches are undertaken in rehabilitation hospitals or in alcohol rehab clinics
that feature rehabilitation methods that center on the administration of doctor prescribed medications along
with extensive counseling and therapy.
In addition, several of these non-12-step treatment protocols perceive alcoholism from both an emotional and a
physiological viewpoint.
Similarly, some of the more productive alcohol rehab programs are more wide-ranging than others and therefore
center on how the alcoholic or alcohol abuser will handle relationship problems after he or she completes
treatment, attains sobriety, and returns to his or her residence.
Furthermore, some of the more effective alcohol recovery programs function from a holistic perspective that
helps problem drinkers identify, address, and process some of the primary issues that more likely than not resulted
in their drinking problems in the first place.
Some of these foundational concerns are the following: career indecision, spirituality issues, grief, poor
anger management capabilities, loss, poor interpersonal relationship skills, unemployment, poor financial
management skills, pain, and poor coping skills.
The Necessity For Outpatient Follow-Up Alcohol Rehab
When an individual undergoes alcohol treatment, it is
particularly imperative to address what he or she is going to do after he or she has terminated the
rehabilitation process.
Stated differently, getting through detoxification and recovering from one's withdrawal symptoms is significant,
but so is the follow-up counseling and treatment that successful rehabilitation programs regularly inaugurate as
soon as the residential part of the rehab protocol terminates.
Some of the more effective and better-known alcohol rehab clinics, for example, initiate outpatient therapy and
counseling follow-up for one year after the inpatient part of the process is accomplished.
In a word, the more broad and competence-based alcohol rehab clinics center on treatment methodologies that are
built and implemented for “long term” success, instead of on quick and simple, band-aid techniques.

| Also called contingency management or behavior contracting, contracting with
alcoholism patients to reward good behavior and to punish bad behavior can improve treatment
outcomes. |
The Significance of The Rehabilitation Environment
The “rehab” environment in which a problem drinker finds himself or herself is an important therapeutic
matter. Some of the more efficient alcohol rehab clinics, for example, provide an involving, inspiring,
relaxing, productive, and safe environment that fosters effectual, up-lifting, and lasting treatment success.
Even though the majority of alcohol treatment programs can be quite expensive, particularly those that consist
of residential, in-patient treatment approaches, the more professional and results-oriented alcohol rehab clinics
put financial gain in the background and often restrict the number of people who are accepted for
treatment.
This is more of a "rehabilitation" decision and less of a "profit" calculation so that staff can supply the
time, compassion, resources, and the effort that top-shelf, competent alcohol treatment requires.
| There are certainly many dangers of alcohol abuse but perhaps the most dangerous
aspects of alcohol abuse involve the loss of a person's life. The two kinds of alcohol-related
deaths that are perhaps the most publicized are alcohol-related traffic fatalities and deaths due
to alcohol poisoning. |
Attributes of Effective Alcohol Rehab Clinics
The following typifies some of the more notable aspects of productive alcohol rehab approaches that are
undertaken in alcohol rehab clinics:
- A caring, professional, and end products-oriented staff
- Hotel or rehabilitation facility suites for out-of town clients or their family
- Approaches with exclusive time periods and length of rehab options that are tailored roughly the needs of
each specific client
- Success rates well beyond the national averages
- Outpatient methods that are individualized to fit the financial capabilities, the personality, and the
needs of each client
- Competitive pricing
- Wide-ranging day and night therapy and counseling sessions
- Medications to aid patients avoid alcohol relapse
- Private detox services
- Hospital and non-hospital treatment options
- Medications to help control and cope with one’s alcohol withdrawal symptoms
| Family members of people who have problems with alcohol can benefit from going to
support groups such as Al-Anon. Other support groups are specially designed for certain age groups,
such as Alateen for teens and Alatot for younger children. |
The Alcohol Treatment Clinic: Conclusion
Most of the "traditional" alcohol rehabilitation protocols are built on the 12-step rehabilitation method
initiated by Alcoholics Anonymous. Other, less traditional alcohol recovery approaches have emerged,
however.
These non-12-step therapeutic programs normally focus less on issues like group support, a "higher power," and
group meetings and more on empirically-validated results that are based on doctor prescribed medications given in
conjunction with comprehensive counseling and therapy and a realistic follow-up treatment program.
Some of the more successful non-12-step alcohol treatment approaches take place in rehab hospitals, treatment
centers, or in alcohol rehab clinics.
Such rehabilitation facilities are typically staffed with empathetic, helpful, and competent healthcare
professionals who try to do everything they can to help their clients learn more helpful decision-making, coping,
life, and relationship skills; help them recover from their drinking problems; and teach them how to restore their
lives for the rest of their lives.
| Some people find that using stress management techniques during their recovery from
alcohol problems is helpful. There is little research to show that using stress management
techniques can increase a person's long-term chances of staying sober. But you may find that it
improves your overall sense of well-being. |

| Based on your answers to the health care provider's questions and upon the physical
exam, it may be concluded that you are indeed, addicted to alcohol, drugs, or both. At this
point, your health care professional will discuss your treatment options. Keep in mind that
chemical dependency experts, like other specialists, will make various suggestions and
recommendations regarding your addiction. You, however, will need to be actively involved in
the decision-making process if your treatment is to be successful. |
